Renowned Bollywood actress and prominent politician Jaya Prada has been given a six-month prison sentence and a fine by a Chennai court following a guilty verdict on Friday. In connection with the case, a fine of Rs 5000 has been ordered, affecting not only Jaya but also her associates Ram Kumar and Raja Babu.
Jaya was the owner of a theater located in Chennai which was eventually closed down. Trouble arose when the theater employees raised complaints about their ESI (Employee State Insurance) payments not being forwarded as they should have been. They alleged that the deducted ESI funds were not transferred to the Government Insurance Corporation, causing distress
Subsequently, the Labor Government Insurance Corporation took legal action against Jaya Prada and her associates. The case was filed at the Egmore Magistrate Court in Chennai. Reports suggest that Jaya herself admitted to the charges laid against her and assured the settlement of the long-pending dues.
She also filed an appeal for the case to be dismissed. The court, however, dismissed her appeal, resulting in the implementation of the penalty and prison term.
