Biden Calls Israeli Takeover of Gaza a Grave Error

US President Joe Biden stated that an Israeli takeover of Gaza would be a grave error and that “Hamas and the extreme elements of Hamas don’t represent all the Palestinian people.” On Sunday’s episode of “The 60 Minutes Interview” on CBS News, Biden had a conversation with Scott Pelly. He said that he opposes the Israeli occupation of Gaza and backed the creation of a humanitarian corridor for the delivery of goods and help into Gaza.

“I believe it would be a grave error. Regarding what transpired in Gaza, I believe that Hamas and its more extremist factions do not speak for all Palestinians. And I believe that Israel should not once more occupy Gaza,” he continued. From 1967 to 2005, Israel had previously occupied Gaza.

Israel’s UN envoy responded to Biden’s remarks by stating that his nation had no desire to remain in Gaza. According to a report in the Israeli news outlet Haaretz, “We have no interest to occupy Gaza or to stay in Gaza, but since we fighting for our survival, and the only way – as the President himself defined – to obliterate Hamas, we have to do whatever needed to obliterate their capabilities.”

After this month’s strike, the American commander asked if he believed Israel would still willing to pursue that course. He responded, “Not now.” He told CBS News, “Not right now, but I think Israel recognizes that a sizable majority of Palestinians do not share the ideas of Hamas and Hezbollah.

Regarding Iran, Biden also issued a warning to Hezbollah and Iran not to join the conflict or escalate it, although he emphasized that there was no concrete proof of Tehran’s involvement in the Hamas attack on Israel.
