Michael Cohen Testifies on Inflating Trump’s Asset Values in Court Battle

Michael Cohen, the former president’s fixer who turned adversary, appeared in court on Tuesday, saying he tried to increase the alleged worth of the former leader’s assets to “whatever number Trump told us to,” in a legal battle that had been building for five years.

The confrontation between Trump and the now-barred attorney who had previously promised to “take a bullet” for him was tense and long anticipated. After serving time in jail, Cohen went on to testify against his former employer in Congress and courtrooms. Now, Cohen is a significant player in the case brought by Letitia James, the attorney general of New York, who claims that Trump and his firm defrauded banks, insurers, and other parties by providing them with financial statements that exaggerated his wealth.

Cohen testified that he and former Trump Organization finance chief Allen Weisselberg worked “to reverse-engineer the various different asset classes, increase those assets, in order to achieve a number that Mr. Trump had tasked us with.” “I tasked by Mr. Trump to increase the total assets, based upon a number that he arbitrarily elected,” Cohen said. Cohen answered, “Whatever number Trump told us to,” when asked what that number was. Trump declared, “I’m not at all concerned with his testimony. “You can examine his track record. He is an unreliable witness.

The former president and front-runner for the Republican nomination in 2024 willingly appeared in court for the eagerly awaited testimony, spending a sixth day this month in the Manhattan trial. Cohen claimed that up until this point, he hadn’t seen Trump in five years. Cohen reminisced, “Heck of a reunion,” when the court took a break.
