Protestors Seize Dagestan Airport Amid Gaza War Tensions Over Israeli Plane

In the midst of the Gaza War, hundreds of protestors seized the main airport in the Russian territory of Dagestan, allegedly in protest of an Israeli plane arriving. On Sunday, the mob managed to get past security and some of them even made it onto the airport’s runway before being escorted off by security personnel.

Russia’s interior ministry released a statement saying, “More than 150 active participants in the unrest have identified, 60 of them have arrested.” Conflicts with the mob resulted in the injuries of nine police officers, two of whom hospitalized. According to local press accounts, the aircraft in question was a Red Wings Russian carrier.

Social media footage from Makhachkala airport showed terrified passengers running to re-enter the aircraft amid chaos. Videos also showed the demonstrators racing through the airport and smashing glass doors, some of them while yelling anti-Semitic epithets. Some spotted waving Palestinian flags on the landing strip, while others seen verifying the arrival passengers’ documents.

Dozens of people seen in pictures and videos on many local Telegram channels, standing outside the airport as if to block automobiles. A second gang observed attempting to overturn a patrol truck. In the videos, there was a protester holding a banner that said, “Child killers have no place in Dagestan.”

The event occurs as Israel carries out more extensive ground operations within the Gaza Strip despite ongoing intense aerial bombardment. More than 8,000 Palestinians, including 3,324 children, have died, according to Gaza officials, since the conflict started on October 7, when Hamas, the organization in charge of the confined enclave, launched an unexpected onslaught inside Israel. Israeli sources claim that the Hamas strike has killed at least 1,400 Israelis and other nationals.
