After saying on Sunday that dropping an atomic bomb on the Gaza Strip, which run by Hamas, “an option,” an Israeli minister from the far-right Otzma Yehudit party suspended indefinitely from cabinet meetings by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Amichai Eliyahu, the minister of Jerusalem affairs and heritage, claimed in a radio broadcast that “there are no non-combatants in Gaza” and that sending help to the region would be “a failure”. Asking whether he thought a nuclear strike on the Gaza Strip was “an option” in the event that there were no non-combatants in Gaza, Eliyahu said, “That’s one way.” Members of the opposition and the ruling coalition outraged by his comments, and requests made to remove him from office.
Eliyahu then modified his comments and referred to it as “metaphorical” in response to the outcry. Any anyone with a brain can see that the atom comment was figurative. It is imperative that we respond to terror with a powerful and disproportionate measure, since this will make it evident to the Nazis and their allies that terrorism is not worth it. Democracies can only combat terrorism with this strategy,” he declared. According to the PMO, Eliyahu has permanently barred from cabinet meetings by Prime Minister Netanyahu. It stated that Eliyahu has no influence on the war cabinet leading the fight against Islamist Hamas and not a member of the security cabinet engaged in making decisions during battle. The comment deemed “detached from reality” by Mr. Netanyahu.
