Rahul Dravid Advocates Strategic Shift in India White-Ball Approach

Rahul Dravid argued for altering India’s white-ball strategy shortly after he appointed head coach, particularly for the One-Day Internationals. Even though India performed well in bilateral ODIs, subsequent World Cups, Down Under, and the UK, their antiquated strategy of saving wickets for the second half of the innings deemed to be too archaic. They seemed to be batting with a hand-break on, only switching to the fifth gear in the final ten overs, despite having all the resources at their disposal. Despite their impressive totals (over 300), they seemed to have fallen behind in certain runs due to their initial cautious approach.

They seldom ever looked to emerge from their shells, even during the most recent T20 World Cup. But their strategy has completely changed since then. India on a roll for the World Cup, previously given glimpses of their blueprint whenever a fully-fit squad available in the lead-up. Rohit Sharma, the captain, is leading the charge for this transformation. Rohit has changed from the batsman he was to someone who now likes to settle into the crease before blowing up—a blueprint that has helped him achieve three double-centuries.

The India captain’s strike rate in the opening powerplay of 2017 World Cup is 130.54, which is 39.01 higher than his lifetime strike rate of 91.53. When it comes to the powerplay, Rohit’s strike-rate is about twenty points higher than Mitchell Marsh’s (111.94), who is in second place. Rohit’s strategy has allowed him to guarantee that the game is over in the first powerplay even when they have been pursuing. Additionally, even when batting first, his quick starts ensure that the middle order isn’t forced to take unnecessary chances.
