Tunneling Expert Professor Arnold Dix Route to India to Assist in Uttarkashi Tunnel Rescue

Professor Arnold Dix, a worldwide authority in tunneling, asked to assist with the rescue effort on Saturday as the effort to free the 41 men stranded in an unfinished tunnel in Uttarkashi approached its seventh day.

He is now traveling to India to support the team working on-site. The specialist talked with India Today about his strategy for freeing the stranded laborers. “I have a clear mission and am currently en route to India.” It was necessary to save the 41 guys. It cannot negotiated. The crew on site and I just had a conversation. Arnold Dix stated, “We are currently debating our alternatives for the safe rescue of these soldiers. “This is one of the most challenging areas,” he continued. In the Himalayas are we now. Those forty-one men are coming home with us. We are finishing this up.

There three proposals suggested for additional rescue operations:

  • Due to topographical considerations, a vertical dig from the summit of a mountain up to 100 feet in the tunnel may take an additional week to finish.
  • a tiny, manually dug tunnel that is conventional, extremely conservative, and usually utilized for hydro projects.
  • Additionally, the scientists are investigating the use of advanced technologies to restore the shattered rock to its original state.
  • On Saturday morning, efforts to free the forty-one laborers who stranded in an Uttarkashi tunnel under construction began again. According to officials, the drilling has stopped for the time being.

A loud cracking sound detected in the tunnel around 2:45 p.m. on Friday, during the placement of the fifth pipe. Following this, the rescue effort halted, according to a statement released late on Friday night by the NHIDCL. Only 24 meters of debris have been removed from the collapsed tunnel by rescue workers thus far.
