Arvind Kejriwal sends resignation to L-G Saxena as Delhi chief minister | LIVE updates

New Delhi:  After a decade of holding the post Arvind Kejriwal has resigned from the Delhi Chief Minister position. AAP leader, Atishi Marlena as the new Delhi CM.

Kejriwal formally submitted his resignation this evening to Lt Governor Vineet Saxena, paving the way for Atishi to be the third woman CM of the national capital. CM-designate Atishi handed over the letter of support from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs to L-G VK Saxena, staking claim to head the government. After party members chose her to lead the government, an emotional Atishi thanked Kejriwal for his trust in her, saying such opportunities are unique to AAP, where a first-time politician can get higher to this level. 

Why did Kejriwal resign, The former Delhi CM,

who is facing corruption charges, resigned after being released on bail from Tihar Jail on moral grounds. While resigning, he said, “Let the people decide if I am imandaar (honest) or gunahgaar (guilty).” Kejriwal said he would only return to office after the people of Delhi determined his “innocence,” as each vote in the upcoming Delhi assembly polls would act as a “certificate” of his integrity. Kejriwal just days after he was granted bail in a corruption case and released from prison.

AAP leader and Delhi minister Gopal Rai said that Kejriwal had stated after getting bail in the Delhi excise case that he will take the post of Chief Minister only after he gets a renewed mandate from the people of Delhi in the assembly poll.

“Accordingly, he gave his resignation. AAP MLAs met in the morning and elected Atishi as their leader. We have conveyed this to the LG. Atishi has staked claim to form the government. We have requested that the date of swearing be decided at the earliest so that works related to the two crore residents of Delhi are taken forward,” he said.

Rai said the new government will work to protect the initiatives taken by Kejriwal for the people of Delhi.

Kejriwal was released from Tihar Jail in the national capital on September 13 after the apex court granted him bail in the Delhi excise policy case.

The apex court also imposed certain conditions for Kejriwal’s release, as well as that he must refrain from making public comments about the case and must attend all hearings before the trial court unless exempt.

The current term of the Delhi Assembly will end on February 11, 2025. The last assembly election in Delhi was held on February 8, 2020. AAP leaders have said that the assembly polls in Delhi should be held with those in Maharashtra and Jharkhand later this year.
