Karan Oberoi Rape: Was the identity of the rape victim revealed in the press conference?

A Mumbai sessions court has refused to stop legal proceedings against Pooja Bedi and 7 others in a major case related to actor Karan Oberoi’s case. These people are accused of revealing the identity of the woman who complained of rape against Karan Oberoi in 2019. This was revealed when a press conference was held soon after Karan’s arrest.

The complaint was filed in the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate Court against Pooja Bedi, actress Anveshi Jain, Chaitanya Bhosale, Varkey Patani, Gurbani Oberoi, Sherlyn Varghese, actor Sudhanshu Pandey, and lawyer Dinesh Tiwari. The complainant woman alleges that soon after the rape complaint was filed against Karan Oberoi, all of them held a press conference at Pooja Bedi’s house. During this, they revealed the identity, name, and many personal details of the woman. Due to this, the woman filed a formal complaint in court in June 2019.

The Metropolitan Court had ordered the police to investigate on this complaint. The investigation revealed that a press conference was held at Pooja Bedi’s house on May 5, 2019. During this, the woman’s identity and other personal information were made public, which should have been protected under the law. The police also said that the video of that press conference went viral on many digital platforms and is still available online today.

In April 2022, all the accused, including Pooja Bedi, challenged the decision of the Magistrate Court in the Sessions Court. They said that there was no common intention between them, and all of them did not reveal the identity of the woman. Some people neither took the name nor shared any personal information.
