This time, longstanding head coach John Kavanagh gave the former two-division UFC champion his black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. John Kavanagh of SBG Ireland, my coach, friend, and mentor, presented me with my black belt tonight. Hard labor for twenty years! Thank you John for all you’ve done over the years, as well as to all of my teammates for supporting me on this amazing jiu jitsu adventure! From the bottom of my heart, I really appreciate all of you.
“A black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu, fantastic! Glory to God, then to Helio [Gracie]. I’ll be wearing the Gi tomorrow, Helio, and I can’t wait. What a flurry.
Of course, Kavanagh descended from Helio Gracie through a lengthy series of instructors that culminated in 2007 when Matt Thornton awarded the Irish teacher his own black belt. At the time, Kavanagh was the first person in the Republic of Ireland to earn a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Thornton’s Straight Blast Gym (SBG) in Oregon also prompted Kavanagh to create his own affiliate facility. Which has been McGregor’s primary training location ever since he joined the UFC.
Gordon Ryan, who regarded as the best grappler in the world in all weight classes, gave Conor McGregor a nod in appreciation for his accomplishment.
“Well deserved,” Ryan said on Instagram. Contrary to popular belief, you are quite skilled on the ground, especially considering that MMA is your primary discipline.
After suffering a fractured leg in his previous bout, Conor McGregor has preparing for a potential comeback to the UFC. Where he anticipated to face Michael Chandler in his first match in more than two years. Although it seems more probable that McGregor will have to wait until some point in 2024 for his comeback, he currently has no scheduled fights.
