ISRO Faces Over 100 Daily Cyberattacks, Says Chief S. Somanath

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), according to its head S. Somanath, experiences more than 100 cyberattacks per day. I Somanath said that the likelihood of cyberattacks is significantly higher in rocket technology, which employs cutting-edge software and chip-based hardware, during his speech at the closing session of the 16th edition of the c0c0n, a two-day international cyber conference in Kerala’s Kochi.

“The organisation equipped with a robust cybersecurity network to face such attacks,” he stated. Notably, the Kerala Police and the Information Security Research Association hosted the seminar. The ISRO chairman added that in addition to testing the software, ISRO is also conducting several tests aimed at ensuring the security of the hardware components inside the rockets.

“In the past, monitoring a single satellite done manually. Now, software used to monitor many satellites simultaneously. This demonstrates the expansion of this industry. It was conceivable to launch from a distant position during COVID, demonstrating the victory of technology, he said. He said that other satellite subtypes exist for navigation, maintenance, and other purposes.

“In addition to these, satellites that support everyday living for regular people are also present. These are all managed by various kinds of software. The protection of all of these requires strong cyber security, Somanath continued. He claimed that modern technology is both a blessing and a danger.

“We can use the same technologies to counter the threats presented by cybercriminals who use tools like artificial intelligence. To achieve this, investigation and diligent work should done, he stated. The state of Kerala, according to Kerala Revenue Minister P Rajeev, who opened the conference’s closing session, is a role model for cyber security governance since the state’s government is able to provide enough protection for the cyberspace.

“The state government is able to give the cyberspace enough protection. By creating the Digital University in the state, the government is also giving this industry with the crucial assistance it needs. Kerala is a state where every home has access to the internet via K-Fone, the minister added.
