India abstained from voting in favor of the UN General Assembly resolution for an urgent humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. India gave two reasons for their abstention: first, the resolution did not identify Hamas; second, the UN had to make a strong statement opposing terrorism.
India’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Yojna Patel, stated, “We hope that the deliberations of this assembly will send a clear message against terror and violence and expand prospects for diplomacy and dialogue while addressing the humanitarian crisis that confronts us.” The proposed resolution demanded that the violence end immediately and that humanitarian aid allowed unimpeded access to the Gaza Strip, which has the focus of Israeli bombardment.
After 1,400 people killed in a surprise attack by Hamas on October 7, Israel launched a huge counteroffensive. India denounced the assaults and implied that the word “Hamas” should not have included in the resolution. “The horrific terror assaults that occurred in Israel on October 7th are deserving of condemnation. We also thinking about individuals who held captive. We demand their unconditional and prompt release. Terrorism is a cancer that has no regard for boundaries, ethnicity, or nationality. There is no excuse for terror attacks that the world should accept. “Let us set aside our differences, come together, and confront terrorism with zero tolerance,” Ms. Patel stated.
Additionally, India expressed its serious worry about the region’s deteriorating security situation and encouraged all parties to defuse the situation. “The alarming number of civilian casualties in the protracted fighting and the worsening security situation gravely concern India. The humanitarian issue will only become worse if conflicts in the area escalate.
