Sonia Gandhi: Congress ‘strongly opposed’ to India’s abstention on UN resolution on Israel-Hamas conflict

In an editorial in The Hindu, Sonia Gandhi wrote: “Contrary to some mischievous suggestions, the position of the Indian National Congress has been long-standing and principles: it is to support direct negotiations for a sovereign independent, viable and secure state of Palestine coexisting in peace with Israel.”

Adding another chapter to the ongoing political debate in India, the interim president of the Indian National Congress, has rebuked the government’s decision to abstain from the recent United Nations (UN) vote on Israel. In a strongly worded statement, criticized the ruling party for what she termed as ‘mischievous suggestions’ in their initial stance on the matter.

Gandhi further accused the government of trying to mislead the public about India’s historical position on the Israel-Palestine issue. She argued that the government’s decision to abstain from the vote was a clear indication of its shift from India’s long-held policy of supporting Palestinian rights.

India’s decision to abstain from the UN vote has sparked a heated debate among politicians and experts, with many questioning the government’s motives. This latest criticism from Gandhi adds more fuel to the ongoing controversy, putting the government’s foreign policy decisions under further scrutiny.
