Music maestro AR Rahman has opened up about his relationship with superstar Kamal Haasan. He also revealed that he had advised Haasan to take a stab at Hollywood filmmaking two decades ago. Rahman added that Haasan still has the opportunity to create a Hollywood film and not be judgemental about the experience.

Recently, Haasan and Rahman were seen together at the Oscar Museum in Los Angeles, enjoying the Hollywood classic The Godfather. In an interview with The Hindu, AR Rahman opened up about their meeting, and said, “We visited the Chinese Theatre and watched Oppenheimer too. I invited him over for lunch after that. He is someone who comes from six generations of filmmaking, and hearing him talk and narrate stories is always fascinating to me.

Talking about the advice that he had given Haasan several years ago, Rahman said, “I feel like he got trapped in this industry over the years. It’s a good thing for us; but for him… I don’t know. 20 years ago, when he had the money, he should have just gone to Hollywood and made a film there. As an experiment perhaps, without worrying about success or failure. He can still do it actually. That’s what I told him now; to make an English film just for the heck of it and not be judgemental about it.

Rahman, a two-time Oscar winner, first composed for Haasan in 1996 for the film Indian. The composer is once again collaborating with Haasan, on his upcoming film with Mani Ratnam.
