On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Joe Biden made a joint commitment to work toward a historic accord to establish diplomatic ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia.
Both leaders expressed a wish to relieve tensions in their relationship during their first meeting since Netanyahu took office again in December, but Biden made it plain he was keen to talk about their disagreements as well. These included Biden’s objection to the contentious proposed revamp of the judiciary by Netanyahu’s far-right cabinet as well as his worry over Israel’s strict stance toward the Palestinians. At the beginning of the negotiations, Biden stated while seated next to Netanyahu in a New York hotel ballroom, “I hope we can get some things settled today.
In a statement released by the White House following the meeting, Biden quoted as having “reiterated his concern about any fundamental changes to Israel’s democratic system, absent the broadest possible consensus.” Biden further called for “immediate measures to improve the security and economic situation, maintain the viability of a two-state solution, and promote a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians,” according to the statement.
The two leaders ultimately decided to schedule their meetings while both were present at the yearly high-level UN General Assembly, as opposed to a meeting at the White House, the more prestigious location that Netanyahu desired. Before the year is up, Biden invited Netanyahu to Washington. In addition to reiterating his support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian issue, Biden emphasized his commitment to stopping Iran from gaining a nuclear weapon. The US-led effort to forge diplomatic ties between longtime rivals Saudi Arabia and Israel was the main item on the agenda.
