According to sources with knowledge of the situation, the Delhi Police’s special cell has discovered proof that the web portal NewsClick received 28.29 crore between 2018 and 2021 from four distinct entities connected to Neville Roy Singham, an American millionaire accused of spreading Chinese propaganda, and a consulting firm that he sold in 2017.
According to a senior Delhi Police officer, of those 28.29 crore, 27.51 crore came from the Justice and Education Fund, a US-based organization, 26.98 lakh from GSPAN LLC, 49.31 lakh from Tricontinental Limited Inc., and 2.03 lakh from Centro Popular De Midas, a Brazilian organization.
In response to a request for anonymity, the official stated, “We have discovered during investigation that out of those received funds, the PPK Studio NewsClick Private Limited – the mother company of NewsClick – transferred 20.53 lakhs to Gautam Navlakha, one of the accused in the Bhima Koregaon case.” The discoveries came two days after Prabir Purkayastha, the founder of NewsClick, and Amit Chakravarty, the head of human resources, detained in connection with an Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act case after extensive raids in five cities.
The webpage allegedly a part of a global network that paid to spread Chinese propaganda, according to a report that appeared in The New York Times on August 5. The American publication said that billionaire Singham sent money to NewsClick and other media organizations worldwide so that they could include Chinese official talking points in their reporting.
