Ishita Moitra in a chat with Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani writer Ishita. One of the aspects of the film that has been called clichéd is the portrayal of Bengalis and Punjabis. Ishita Moitra explained that the character Rani, played by Alia Bhatt, represents an outspoken, modern, and intellectual woman who works at a news channel. Moitra stated that this portrayal is based on her own experience working in a magazine in Delhi, which had a large number of Bengali employees. She added that this representation is done for a reason, as it is part of the character’s journey.

Another scene in the film that has garnered attention is when the character Rocky, played by Ranveer Singh, mistakes Rabindranath Tagore for his grandfather. Some people have found this scene insensitive, but Ishita Moitra explained that it is in line with Rocky’s character, who lacks general knowledge and would not immediately recognize famous personalities. She also mentioned that it is common for Bengali households to have a photo of Tagore.

Moving on, Moitra praised Karan Johar for his previous films that tackled social issues and introduced gay characters at a time when such topics were not openly discussed. She described him as politically aware and intelligent.

The film has also drawn comparisons to iconic Bollywood movies. Moitra clarified that the intention behind the song “Dhindora Baje Re” was to pay homage to the popular song “Dola Re Dola.” She added that the entire film is a tribute to Hindi cinema, with many old songs being used. Moitra expressed her delight that the film is reminding people of other films and evoking nostalgia.
