Film released in 1982: BR Chopra was a film producer-director who made his name worldwide with one of his serials. BR Chopra is still remembered for ‘Mahabharata’. However, he made few films apart from Mahabharata, which created history at the box office. Crowds of people reached the theaters to watch this film. Although it was a controversial film, posters were put up outside theaters to prevent people from seeing it. But, despite all the banner-posters and controversies, the film created a panic at the box office.

One of BR Chopra’s major films was ‘Nikaah’, a film released in 1982 that created a lot of buzz. Not only that, the atmosphere surrounding the film was such that in those days, 34 FIRs were registered against BR Chopra because of the film. Even so, the film had such a magic on the audience that a long queue of people formed at the ticket window for tickets. The film featured actors like Deepak Parashar, Raj Babbar and Salma Agha in lead roles.

Posters put up outside theaters to see ‘No’

The film featured Salma Agha in the role of singer Nilofer, while Deepak Parashar played the role of her husband Nawab Wasim and Raj Babbar played the role of her lover Haider. The film was made on the issue of ‘triple talaq’, but released on 24 September 1982, the film was renamed to ‘Nikaah’ after much controversy. Whereas, the title of the film was earlier decided as ‘Talak, Talaq, Talaq’. As much as the film entertained the audience, it also courted controversies.

It was a film based on the issue of triple talaq, in which many aspects of the suffering of Muslim women were intimately presented to the audience. However, director BR Chopra faced many difficulties with the film. From the announcement of the film’s title to its release, it was constantly in controversy. But, somehow the film was completed and became a success.
