Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the G20 leaders’ meeting, which will be place here on September 9-10, according to Russian Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov.
Friday’s declaration is consistent with previous recent international conferences conducted since the beginning of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022, when Mr. Putin has been absent. He was scheduled to visit Turkey at the request of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, but the current announcement has placed a shadow on that trip as well.
Mr. Peskov on Putin
“Putin has no plans to attend the G20 summit in India in September.” “The main focus right now is the special military operation [in Ukraine],” Mr. Peskov said in an interview with Russian media.
President Putin did not attend last year’s G20 conference in Bali, and he did not attend the 15th BRICS summit, which ended on Thursday in Johannesburg.
The Russian delegation was led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in both Bali and Johannesburg. Several leaders have already stated that they will attend the G20 conference in India.
The White House has announced that President Joe Biden would be in Delhi from September 7 to September 10. Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, has also confirmed his plans to visit India.
Previously, the cancellation of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) physical meeting under Indian chairmanship had pre-empted Mr. Putin’s prospective visit to India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over the SCO summit in virtual mode on July 4. In May, India determined that summit cannot be hold in physical form.
However, the Russian President will visit Tajikistan and Turkmenistan in June 2022. In Tajikistan, he addressed the situation in Kabul following the Taliban takeover in 2021 with President Emomali Rahmon.
He attended in the Caspian Summit, with improving land connections from South, West, and Central Asia to Russia.
