The OSIRIS-REx mission from NASA has accomplished its goal of returning samples from the asteroid Bennu. Scientists examined the avionics deck of the scientific canister that had just landed from orbit and discovered trash and black dust.

Nasa removed the capsule’s original covering, exposing the startling discoveries. After landing in the Utah desert the day before, the canister, which is a component of the OSIRIS-REx sample return capsule, only recently transported to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston on September 25.

The greatest collection of astromaterials in the world kept at the Johnson Space Center. The complex disassembly of the Touch and Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism (TAGSAM) is about to carried out by curation specialists in order to retrieve the bulk sample it contains.

Scientists gasped as the lid on the OSIRIS-REx asteroid sample return canister raised, revealing black powder and sand-sized particles on the interior of the lid and base, as NASA reported on social networking site X.

The sample return canister’s aluminum lid had to taken off by Lockheed Martin Recovery Specialists Levi Hanish and Michael Kaye. The enormous piece of hardware safely handled during this delicate procedure within a glovebox that particularly made for the purpose. The TAGSAM will placed inside a sealed transfer container after removed from the canister.

The crew has time to place the TAGSAM into another special glovebox because this container made to maintain a nitrogen atmosphere for up to two hours. This procedure is essential for accelerating the disassembly procedure. The crew intensely concentrated on this task and aims to reveal the sample with astounding accuracy. By using such care, it is possible to remove the fragile hardware without damaging the sample within.
